Breeding Dogs : Finding Homes for Your Litter
If your dog has given birth to a litter of healthy puppies, you should be prepared to find appropriate homes for each puppy born. Unless you plan to keep every puppy that is born in the litter, the sooner you begin to find homes for these precious pooches, the better off you will be in the end.
Ask your friends, neighbors, coworkers, or family members if they are interested in adopting one of the pups in your dog’s litter. If you know the identify of the dog that fathered your litter of puppies, consider asking that individual or family if they would like to add another pooch to their household.
Begin the search for homes for your litter of puppies before the pooches are born. This will be easier to do if the dogs are pure bred and have been properly bred using the correct methods for choosing quality parents from pure blood lineages. By choosing the parents before you breed your dog, you will ensure the success of the litter of puppies and have a very desirable bunch of pooches up for sale. Additionally, you will want to charge more for a litter of pure bred pooches, since you will probably incur a host of fees in association of their conception and birth.
Generally, the owner of a female dog will pay a stud fee for the service of a male dog to serve as the father of the litter. This fee can easily be recouped once the puppies are born if you properly put a proper price on the pups. Additionally, you will incur veterinarian bills since the mother dog must be properly monitored during the gestation of her development. Finally, more veterinary bills will be incurred due to the necessity for the proper veterinarian care for the puppies once the litter is born.
If you are a member of an organization associated with a specific breed of dog, consider announcing the upcoming birth at a meeting or through the organization’s website. Many breed specific organizations will encourage individuals interested in welcoming a dog of that breed into their homes purchase a pup from a member of that organization.
Also, members who currently own dogs of that breed may be looking to add another four legged member to their family. Word of mouth is an excellent way to spread the word that your pooch is expecting and begin lining up homes for the puppies.
Consider posting advertisements in your local newspaper’s classified advertising section or post a virtual advertisement on the World Wide Web. Regardless how you advertise the fact that your dog is about to have a litter of puppies, just be sure to spread the word! Again, the earlier you start your search the less time you will have to spend feeding and caring for puppies that still do not have owners. You should, however, be sure that you properly wean the puppies and they stay with the mother for the appropriate time before you introduce them to their new household.
Before you push your puppies onto anyone that comes along and wants to buy a pooch, take time to consider the individual, family, and lifestyle. Keep the puppy’s best interest in mind and carefully choose homes where the pups are guaranteed to prosper.
Avoid selling puppies to individuals with less than admirable aspects for the dogs. You do not want these puppies to end up in an animal shelter since their owner was unable or unwilling to care for them, so carefully choose the owners before you agree to sell the dog. Remember, owning a dog is a huge responsibility and should be considered in the utmost seriousness.
